The Opportunity
Palm oil mill effluent (POME), a waste generated in the milling process, is
harmful to the environment if it is discharged untreated. The conventional
industry practice of processing POME is to subject it to anaerobic digestion
in open-air treatment ponds. However, this process can release a large
amount of greenhouse gas (GHG), particularly methane gas, into the
atmosphere.
PT Musin Mas is developing a methane capture project at their Batang Kulim
Palm Oil Mill at Sorek, Riau, Sumatra in Indonesia.
The purpose of the project is to capture
methane from the treatment of POME and
use the captured methane to generate
electricity for the mill’s electricity system.
The project helps reduce harmful GHG
emissions and provides electricity for the mill.

The Solution
Methane captured in the reactor will be
treated in a scrubber to remove hydrogen
sulfide. It will then be treated in a chiller
to remove moisture before being used to
generate electricity in three biogas engines,
each with a gross generating capacity of
approximately 1 MW.
The electricity generated by the Dresser-Rand
Guascor® SFGLD 560 engines will supply
electricity for the biogas project and generate
electricity for the mill.
The net electricity generated will displace
electricity that would otherwise have been
generated by the mill’s biomass boilers and
diesel generator sets.The excess biogas will
be flared.
