Medium-capacity solids-ejecting centrifuge for the wine and beverage industries
CLARA 500
Alfa Laval disc stack centrifuges for the wine and beverage
industries are available in many different sizes and confi gurations,
each specially designed for a specifi c kind of separation
duty. With a feed fl ow capacity of up to 50 m3/h*, combined
with excellent solids handling capability, the CLARA 500 is
ideal for conditions common in many of the processes used
in the wine and beverage industries. The CLARA 500 design
combines the benefi ts of a high G-force, a high standard of
hygiene and automated operation.
The Alfa Laval CLARA 500 clarifi er features the computerized
Alfa Laval SmartEject self-triggering system, which provides
intermittent discharge of solids that have a high dry matter
content. The CLARA 500 is also equipped with Oxy-Stop, a
hydrohermetic seal that ensures minimal oxygen pick-up in
the clarifi ed liquid.
* actual capacity depends on the specifi c application
Applications
The Alfa Laval CLARA 500 is specially designed for use in the
wine and beverage industries, and is particularly suitable for
clarifying the following products:
• white grape must (free run and press juice)
• young wine (still and sparkling)
• matured wine
• fruit juices (deciduous, citrus and tropical).
The CLARA 500 can be used for removing suspended solids
that contain particles in the size range 0.5–500 ìm. The solids
content in the feed is normally in the range of 0.1–10% by
volume, depending on the specifi c operation involved, but can
also be higher.
Standard design
The machine consists of a frame that has a horizontal drive
shaft, worm gear, lubricating oil bath and vertical bowl spindle
in the lower part. The motor is of a type suitable for variable
frequency drive (VFD).
The bowl is mounted on top of the spindle, inside the space
formed by the upper part of the frame, the solids collecting
cover, and the frame hood. The feed and liquid discharge
CLARA 500 complete with motor
system also rests on this structure. All metallic parts that
come in contact with the process liquid are made of highgrade
stainless steel. Liquid-wetted rubber gaskets are made
of FDA-compliant nitrile rubber.
The upper part of the frame and the hood are cooled with
water, which reduces temperature increase of the process
medium to a minimum and acts as a sound dampener at the
same time.
The CLARA 500 centrifuge is equipped with sensors for monitoring
bowl speed and vibration level. Flushing takes place
inside, above and under the bowl, in the solids collecting ring,
and in the Oxy-Stop seal.
