In April 2012, Gates issued a Product Application Note comparing Jason/Megadyne Platinum to Poly Chain®
GT® Carbon™. Their conclusion falsely states “Platinum belts are not suitable or capable of replacing Poly
Chain GT Carbon belts at all.” Jason/Megadyne has analyzed the Gates document and the following serves
to illustrate the key shortcomings of their analysis.
Belt Profile Comparison
In their document, Gates compares the Platinum “RPP®” belt tooth profile to the Poly Chain GT Carbon
(PCGT) belt tooth profile. This is a fundamental mistake on their part in that the Platinum does not
possess an RPP belt tooth profile. Platinum has an RPC belt tooth profile, an evolution of the RPP belt
profile enhanced and refined to allow interchangeability with all the major pulley profiles in the industry,
including Poly Chain GT.

The RPP belt tooth is
too wide for the GT
groove.

The non-parallel
gap will result in
uneven wear.
Incorrect comparison by Gates of PCGT profile to non-existent Platinum “RPP” profile
Jason/Megadyne introduced the new RPC profile (8M & 14M) in 2008, well in advance of the Platinum
development and introduction, with the following targets:
To be fully interchangeable on Poly Chain GT sprockets;
Allows Jason/Megadyne timing belts to operate directly in Poly Chain applications;
t
l Retain interchange possibilities on original RPP® and HTD® sprockets;
tt
Allows one single system for all application needs, without changing the pulleys.
t
l Designed around the original parabolic curvilinear shape;
tt
RPC retains the advantage of parabolic shape (low noise, smooth meshing) with the same t
tt
familiar look of RPP.

We agree with Gates that the RPP belt tooth profile does not mesh perfectly in Poly Chain GT pulleys,
that’s exactly why we made the changes seen in the illustration below to produce the new fully
interchangeable RPC belt tooth profile!
The RPC belt tooth profile of Platinum belt keeps the
original parabolic tooth sidewall that is perfectly
compatible with the existing RPP pulley tooth profile.
Refinements in the RPC belt tooth profile allow the
use of Platinum with other high performance pulleys
that do not use the RPP pulley tooth profile
