Weather proof solutions for Irving Oil's hangar door
nnnnIrving Oil Ís a family-owned and privately-held
nnnnregional energy processing, transporting, and
nnnnmarketing company headquartered Ín Saint John,
nnnnNew Brunswick, Canada, with US marketing op-
nnnnerations in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. With
nnnnover 7,000 employees, over 700 fueling locations,
nnnnoperations from 13 marine terminals, and a deliv-
nnnnery fleet of tractor-trailers, they serve wholesale,
nnnncommercial, and retail customers Ín Eastern Can-
nnnnada, Quebec, and New England.
nnnnTheir old corporate flight operations were
nnnnhoused Ín a 1950's era hangar with a door too low
nnnnto accommodate today's larger business jets. It was
nnnntime to build a new modern facility. During the
nnnndesign process, Irving Oil and their general con-
nnnntractor, FCC Construction, visited the Nation-
nnnnal Business Aviation Association (NBAA) show to
nnnnlearn more about the latest products for their new
nnnncorporate flight center. During the show, they
nnnnstopped by all hangar door manufacturer s booths
nnnnto better understand which door system would
nnnnbest perform Ín the cold climate of Saint John. The
nnnnteam was intrigued by the Megadoor concept at
nnnnthe show, but wanted to visit some cold weather in-
nnnnstallations to see the doors Ín action and grill the
nnnnowners on their Megadoor's performance. First,
nnnnthey flew to Montreal, Canada and met with Bom-
nnnnbardier- DorvaPs Facility Manager and discussed
nnnnthe 40+ Megadoors installed at their facility over
nnnnthe last 12 years. Then the group flew to Port-
nnnnsmouth, New Hampshire to tour the Megadoors
nnnninstalled at Port City Air, the FBO they routine-
nnnnly use and the new Alpha Flying facility just down
nnnnthe ramp. The tour confirmed Megadoors benefits
nnnnover other traditional door systems and gave the
nnnnteam the confidence to incorporate a Megadoor
nnnninto their new corporate flight operations.
nnnnCritical issues:
nnnn• Cold Weather Performance — The door must
nnnnoperate reliably Ín harsh winter conditions.
nnnn• Energy Efficiency — Cost effectively climate
nnnncontrol the hanger Ín the cold Saint John
nnnnwinters.
nnnn• Aesthetics — The owner wanted a stylish, mod-
nnnnern facility that complimented the company's
nnnnimage.
nnnnMegadoor Provided:
nnnn• Hangar door design and facilitated the struc-
nnnntural integration of the door system into the
nnnnbuilding.
nnnn• (1) no' X 28' (33.5 X 8.5 m) Single leaf door sys-
nnnntem.
nnnnBenefits:
nnnn• Cold Weather Performance — Originally de-
nnnnveloped near the Arctic Circle, Ín Northern
nnnnSweden, the Megadoor has earned the repu-
nnnntation over the last 30 years as the best cold
nnnnweather door on the market for large openings.
nnnnSince Megadoors operate vertically, they do not
nnnnrequire floor tracks, required by bottom roll-
nnnning doors, which commonly fill with ice dur-
nnnning winter months, hindering operation. Also,
nnnnsince Megadoors operate vertically Ín the same
nnnnplane, you do not need to plow the snow Ín
nnnnfront of the door before opening it, as required
nnnnby bi-fold or canopy doors. Ice does not accu-
nnnnmulate on the Megadoor exterior surface, like
nnnnconventional doors, because as the door fab-
nnnnric flexes Ín the wind or folds during opera-
nnnntion, the ice just flakes off. Lastly, the Mega-
nnnndoor will not freeze to the ground like other
nnnndoor systems which can severley damage con-
nnnnventional doors if you try to open them while
nnnnlocked Ín ice.
nnnn• Energy Efficiency — With over 100 Arctic
nnnnand Antarctic installations, the Megadoor has
nnnnproven to be the most energy efficient hang-
nnnnar door Ín the world. 80 % of energy loss on a
nnnnclosed hangar door Ís attributed to aír infiltra-
nnnntion around poor seals. The dramatically supe-
nnnnrior seals on the Megadoor reduce this aír in-
nnnnfiltration more than any other door.
nnnnIn addition, the vertically operating
nnnnMegadoors enable Irving Oil to open the door
nnnnjust enough for aircraft or vehicle movement.
nnnnWith this system, crews do not unnecessar-
nnnnily expose the top of the hangar, releasing all
nnnnthe warm, conditioned aír. Together, these fea-
nnnntures enable a cost effective, climate controlled
nnnnhangar.
nnnn• Aesthetics — The translucent Megadoor allows
nnnna substantial amount of natural light to enter
nnnnthe all white hangar interior creating a warm
nnnnand cheerful atmosphere even on the gray,
nnnncold winter days. The clean lines of the Mega-
nnnndoor compliment the classic arched roof de-
nnnnsign, distinguishing the facility from the com-
nnnnmon hangar.
