nnnnThermo Scientific Masterflex Pumps
nnnnOutperform AOD Pumps With Less Energy
nnnnUse, Less Process Downtime
nnnnGregg E. Johnson, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Fluid Handling, Barrington, IL, USA.
nnnnAir-operated diaphragm (AOD)
nnnnpumps are often chosen due to
nnnntheir relatively low initial cost.
nnnnUsers, however, often find this first
nnnncost doesn't look as good once the
nnnnpump's high life cycle costs start
nnnnfactoring in — including high energy
nnnnconsumption, expensive rebuild parts,
nnnnand expensive downtime.
nnnnAOD pumps have numerous points
nnnnof failure, including diaphragms
nnnnsubject to rupture, air valve
nnnnmechanisms that freeze up, check
nnnnvalves and seats prone to abrasive
nnnnwear and clogging. They are also
nnnninefficient due to the consumption
nnnnof compressed air. Fluid changes
nnnnand cleaning AOD pumps are a big
nnnnhassle, too - plus, they generate a lot
nnnnof noise.
nnnnLess shear, less energy usage
nnnnLike AOD pumps, Thermo Scientific
nnnnMasterflex® peristaltic pumps
nnnnhandle a wide variety of solids
nnnnand viscosities, but Masterflex
nnnnpumps consume 4-6 times less
nnnnenergy and won't damage shear-
nnnnsensitive products. Maintenance
nnnnrequirements for AOD pumps
nnnnare often time-consuming and
nnnnexpensive, involving check ball,
nnnndiaphragm, and seat replacement,
nnnnand performing air motor rebuilds.
nnnnMasterflex pumps provide superior per-
nnnnformance when pumping fluids with undis-
nnnnsolved solids that can clog check valves in
nnnnAOD pumps.
nnnnMasterflex pumps, as well as our
nnnnPonndorf hose pumps, can be
nnnnserviced in place by simply changing
nnnnor sliding the hose or tubing. The
nnnnpump's hosing or tubing is its only
nnnnwear component.
nnnnLower lifecycle costs
nnnnLifecycle costs for Masterflex and
nnnnPonndorf pumps are much less
nnnnthan for AOD pumps. There's no
nnnnexcessive downtimes for cleaning,
nnnnstripping and repairing with our
nnnnsystems - service means only a
nnnnquick tube or hose replacement.
nnnnAOD pumps can run to catastrophic
nnnnfailure leading to pumpage leaks
nnnninto the air motor, whereas pump
nnnnhose or tubing failure with our
nnnnsystems can generally be predicted,
nnnnallowing for proactive maintenance.
nnnnAOD pumps can pump in only
nnnnone direction, but our pumps
nnnnare bidirectional, providing you
nnnnwith both great performance and
nnnnflexibility.
nnnnMasterflex or AOD pumps:
nnnnWhich is best?
nnnnAir operated diaphragm (AOD)
nnnnpumps are relatively inexpensive to
nnnnpurchase, but they
nnnncome with a lot of
nnnndrawbacks - heavy
nnnnpulsation, stalling
nnnnvalves, costly spares,
nnnnnoisy operation,
nnnndowntime. Energy
nnnnusage for an AOD
nnnnpump is high, and
nnnnthe uneven flow and
nnnnthe pressure fluctuations from the
nnnnair compressor can often cause
nnnninefficient performance.
