Activated carbon filter
Activated carbon filters are used in a large range of applications, sole or installed downstream of other
technologies for waste gas purification.
In most applications we handle, we have to face a high moisture content of
the crude gas. Normally, under these conditions the use of activated carbon is not
recommended, because the dampness limits purification efficiency. A specially
treated activated carbon is available for the purification of damp air, however with
the disadvantage that this charcoal can´t be regenerated. Therefore it is an
expensive and ecologically unsatisfying solution.
Working principle
For this reason we looked for a cheap and easy way of regeneration for charcoals
intended for use in cleaning H2S from damp air. We found an impregnated and
doted carbon which catalyzes the oxidation of the adsorbed H2S to H2SO4. The
sulfuric acid can be washed out by rinsing with water. Without exchange, transport
and external treatment the activated carbon can be reused.
Another application for adsorption by activated carbon is the purification of solvent
loaded air. For this specific case other pretreated carbons are available.
