Case Study

The Opportunity
As the capital of the Republic of
Turkey since 1923, Ankara is an
ancient city, dating back more
than five millennia. It is now the
seat of the Turkish Government.
The city is located in the Asian
region of Turkey approximately 218
miles (350 kilometers) east of the
country’s largest city, Istanbul.
The province has a population of
around 4.5 million. Ankara is as
much a modern city as it is an
ancient one with contemporary
architecture as well as ancient
artifacts and monuments.
Ostim Finance and Business Center
(OFIM) is a commercial center
located in the high-end district of
Ankara which includes many different business activities such as shops, company offices, institutions, and a
hotel. This business center has an area of 693,680 square feet (64,445 square meters) equipped with the most
modern design and architecture.
Undoubtedly, a large facility needs an economical and reliable source of power, heating and cooling for air
conditioning. As such, OFIM explored options to provide the power, heating and cooling necessary for their
center.
Trigeneration is a process which allows for the generation of electricity, thermal energy and cooling from a
single fuel source. Therefore, it was determined that a trigeneration system would be worthwhile investment for
the OFIM.

Through the local distributor company Alternatif Power®, we designed
and installed a trigeneration system equipped with two Dresser-Rand
Guascor® SFGLD560 natural gas gen-sets. The total output provided for
this project is 2.0 MWe (2.6 MWt of thermal output) used to heat or cool
the building.

This system allows the OFIM center to independently generate energy
and provides free heating in winter, and cooling in summer, by using
gen-set jacket cooling water in heat recovery boilers and the absorption
chiller.
