The Opportunity
The Cocal plant is a sugar refining mill located southwest of the state of
São Paulo in the municipality of Paulista, Paraguassu. Although the region is
classified as a tourist resort, the main economy is driven by agriculture.
The plant sells cane sugar, crystal sugar and very high polarization (VHP)
sugar, and anhydrous and hydrous ethanol.
It produces 249,700 tons of sugar, 66 million liters of hydrated ethanol and 14
million liters of anhydrous ethanol annually.
Cocal was founded in 1980, a period in which the Brazilian government began
promoting bioethanol as a fuel. This effort was a response to the oil crisis in
the 1970s and established a challenge for an innovative energy policy.

Cocal’s history with energy efficiency is leading the company to investigate
and install a system using a clean and renewable fuel source to power
generators and capture electricity for the plant to use for its own needs or sell
to the grid.

The Solution
Dresser-Rand installed its Guascor® SFE 240 engine, which is powered by
ethanol and has produced 450 kW of power output over a period of six
months; this is equivalent to 4,000 hours.
This trial ultimately furthers the goal of demonstrating potential power and
efficiency results and supports the commercial release of the equipment.
