Clean Energy for Itajaí City Landfill
Case Study

The Opportunity
Itajaí, located on the coast of Santa Catarina
State in the southern region of Brazil, hosts
one of the largest harbors in the country. The
port of Itajaí is responsible for the majority
of exports from southern Brazil and ranks
second nationally for moving containers. With
this industry predominate in the area, Santa
Catalina produces tons of daily waste which
is disposed of in a landfill. Now, this waste is
being transformed to generate clean energy.
In 2013, a project was installed in the
Canhanduba Landfill, which receives 350
tonnes of municipal solid waste per day.
This is the first biogas thermal power plant
installed in a medium-sized landfill in the country. The project combines improved municipal solid waste
management, focused on reducing environmental impact, and the exploitation of biogas, a clean and renewable
source of energy.
The plant began operating in Itajaí in May 2014. Power is generated by capturing methane gas produced by
the decomposition of municipal solid waste (MSW) deposited daily in the local landfill. This gas was previously
burned and released into the atmosphere.
The director and president of Itajaí Biogas Energia S/A, said that the process of transforming gas into energy
is simple. The methane gas emitted by the decomposition of organic matter is captured through a collection
system, then it is cooled and injected into the motorgenerator which converts it into electrical energy.
Barrionuevo, inspired by similar projects implemented in Salvador and Sao Joao, realized that the idea of
building a biogas plant in Itajaí was possible.
The goal is to reduce environmental impact and improve energy use by better managing MSW.
These projects have enormous potential which is explained by the large number of small towns in Brazil in
need of reliable power. Seeing the opportunity, the companies JMalucelli Sanitation and Environmental Tertium
accepted the challenge and in October 2013 began work on the biogas plant, which costs around £7,500,000
($12,045,160).

gen-set, which produces 1 MW of
power output. The project started
with the production of about 1
MW. The goal is to increase the
installed number of units to reach
at least to 3 MW.
