nnnnThe Universal Time & Frequency System
nnnn(UTFS) from Symmetricom is designed to
nnnnachieve precise time and frequency signal
nnnndistribution and synchronization via optical
nnnnfiber to local areas as well as to widely
nnnndispersed locations. At the front end of the
nnnnUTFS is the Universal Time Code Generator
nnnn(UTCG), a state-of-the-art multiplexer that
nnnnreceives multiple inputs, including a frequen-
nnnncy reference (required), 1PPS Sync signal
nnnn(optional), and I RIG-B time code (optional). In
nnnnturn, the UTCG simultaneously outputs all
nnnntiming, RF, and time code on a single fiber to
nnnnone or more Time Code Translators (TCTs) at
nnnnremote locations.
nnnnHIGH-QUALITY SIGNALS
nnnnBecause fiberoptic cable carries the time
nnnncode to the TCT, the signal is of extremely
nnnnhigh quality. There are no ground loops,
nnnncrosstalk, or attenuation. No matter how
nnnnmany or what type of timing signals are
nnnnneeded at a remote location, only a single
nnnnfiber pair is ever required. One fiber carries
nnnnall timing signals to the TCT and the other
nnnnoptional fiber returns status information to
nnnnthe UTCG.
nnnnAn optional Ethernet connection enables
nnnnremote monitoring of system status and
nnnnconfiguration. Electrical and visual alarm
nnnnoutputs are also available to allow continuous
nnnnstatus monitoring.
nnnnIn addition, the UTCG has the ability to com-
nnnnpare its internal time to an external 1 PPS
nnnnsignal. When this feature is enabled and the
nnnntwo signals are offset by more than 20 ns,
nnnnthe system automatically triggers an alarm.
nnnnThe UTCG is housed in a 4U 19-inch rack-
nnnnmount modular chassis. The system includes
nnnndual redundant power supplies that can be
nnnnhot-swapped to keep the system running if
nnnnone fails.
