ULTRAPRECISION OPTICAL CMM
FOR QUALITY CONTROL IN PRODUCTION OF ORTHOPAEDIC IMPLANTS.
HIP JOINTS
The RedLux Optical CMM provides manufacturers of artificial joints with a fast and accurate instrument
which checks component form in a matter of seconds or minutes, reducing down time in production
environments. Our validated methodology* for orthopaedic component measurement uses non-
contact profiling to generate 3 dimensional images with resolution down to 3 nanometres.
The use of proven optical sensors leads to significant increase in measurement speed, while combining
the accuracy of a roundness measurement with the coverage of a CMM, without touching the
component therefore avoiding damage to the bearing surface, this making the instrument ideal for
measuring components in production.
The RedLux Optical CMM provides unparalleled levels of 3D capture for measurement in artificial joints.
Mounted on an anti-vibration platform the machine can be used on the shop floor and gives on-screen
results for analysis as soon as the measurement is completed. For example the deviation from design
intent on a head component of a hip joint can be seen immediately as demonstrated in the data set
below. Measurement results can be stored directly in your database, if required.
The image on the left shows a head with colour showing
deviation from perfect sphere. Here blue and purple depict the
greatest deviation from reference, with a peak-to-peak value of
5.0 um. Additionally, the radius is measured at 15.993 mm.
These measurements will take around 2-3 minutes to execute
and the data is available instantly.
Corresponding measurements can be taken of the cup, the
image on the right showing the deviation from perfect sphere,
with a peak-to-peak value of 9.1 um. Here the radius is
20.058 mm.

Additionally we are now offering cup rim measurement. This
data set demonstrates the deviation from design intent, giving
you the possibility of better controlling the geometry of cup
edges.
