The Universal Time & Frequency System

(UTFS) from Symmetricom is designed to

achieve precise time and frequency signal

nnnn

distribution and synchronization via optical

nnnn

fiber to local areas as well as to widely

nnnn

dispersed locations. At the front end of the

nnnn

UTFS is the Universal Time Code Generator

nnnn

(UTCG), a state-of-the-art multiplexer that

nnnn

receives multiple inputs, including a frequen-

nnnn

cy reference (required), 1PPS Sync signal

nnnn

(optional), and I RIG-B time code (optional). In

nnnn

turn, the UTCG simultaneously outputs all

nnnn

timing, RF, and time code on a single fiber to

nnnn

one or more Time Code Translators (TCTs) at

nnnn

remote locations.

HIGH-QUALITY SIGNALS

nnnn

Because fiberoptic cable carries the time

nnnn

code to the TCT, the signal is of extremely

nnnn

high quality. There are no ground loops,

nnnn

crosstalk, or attenuation. No matter how

nnnn

many or what type of timing signals are

nnnn

needed at a remote location, only a single

nnnn

fiber pair is ever required. One fiber carries

nnnn

all timing signals to the TCT and the other

nnnn

optional fiber returns status information to

nnnn

the UTCG.

nnnn

An optional Ethernet connection enables

nnnn

remote monitoring of system status and

nnnn

configuration. Electrical and visual alarm

nnnn

outputs are also available to allow continuous

nnnn

status monitoring.

In addition, the UTCG has the ability to com-

nnnn

pare its internal time to an external 1 PPS

nnnn

signal. When this feature is enabled and the

nnnn

two signals are offset by more than 20 ns,

nnnn

the system automatically triggers an alarm.

The UTCG is housed in a 4U 19-inch rack-

nnnn

mount modular chassis. The system includes

nnnn

dual redundant power supplies that can be

nnnn

hot-swapped to keep the system running if

nnnn

one fails.
