nnnnNew Hangar
nnnnMegadoor proudly provided the hangar doors for the new 120,000 sq ft (11 150
nnnnsqm) Florida State College at Jacksonville's Aircraft Services Facility.
nnnnThe three-bay hangar with adjoining
nnnnclassroom space is jointly owned and
nnnnoperated by Florida State College
nnnnat Jacksonville (FSCJ) and Jacksonville
nnnnAviation Authority (JAA). Flightstar Aircraft
nnnnServices, an aviation MRO provider, leases
nnnnapproximately 95% of the facility.
nnnnPond & Company was commissioned by
nnnnFSCJ to design the facility and prepare
nnnna Design-Build Request for Proposal for
nnnnthe new Si4.6 million Aircraft Coating
nnnnEducation Facility. One of the initial
nnnnchallenges was to design a cost effective
nnnnthree-bay hangar. Originally, bottom
nnnnrolling doors were considered, but the
nnnnadditional side room required forthe door
nnnnpockets significantly increased the building
nnnncost. Consideration was given to eliminating
nnnnthe door pockets and rolling the hangar
nnnndoors that needed to be opened in front
nnnnof the adjacent hangar bay. However, this
nnnnfacility would have multiple tenants and it
nnnnwas not reasonable to allow one tenant's
nnnnoperations to be affected every time an
nnnnadjacent bay had to be opened. We were
nnnnconsulted about these issues and were
nnnnable to present the Pond team with the
nnnnvertical lifting Megadoor solution, which
nnnnwould elegantly eliminate the need for
nnnndoor pockets, allowing for a compact, cost
nnnneffective design. The Megadoor design
nnnnwould also allow all three hangar bays to be
nnnnopened without affecting the adjacent bay.
nnnnAfter these concerns were addressed, the
nnnnteam's attention turned to the Coating
nnnnBay. A low air infiltration door system is
nnnncritical to ensuring a high quality paint
nnnnjob and minimizing the size of the air
nnnnhandlers and filtration needed to meet EPA
nnnnregulations. After reviewing in detail the
nnnnunique double side seals of the Megadoor,
nnnnand comparing expected air infiltration
nnnnto traditional bottom rolling doors, the
nnnnMegadoor systems were specified for the
nnnnentire project.
nnnnAfter competing against five teams, Dana B
nnnnKenyon was awarded the project. "Basically,
nnnnwhat we did was we teamed early on with
nnnnour subcontractors and the design team of
nnnnRS&H duringthe bidding processto getthe
nnnnmost competitive design/build package,"
nnnnexplains Jamison Chattin, Dana B. Kenyon
nnnnCo. vice president and senior project
nnnnmanager. "We also conferred with Nucor
nnnnBuilding Systems on the pre-engineered
nnnnmetal building system and Megadoor for
nnnnthe hangar doors that would be used for
nnnnthe facility. We had early design meetings
nnnnwith them, even before we got the job,
