SML winders – technology that sets
new standards
SML winder series W3000 is designed for both a
maximum roll diameters of 400mm required for 3-inch
jumbo rolls and the production of 2-inch hand stretch
rolls. Moreover, the W3000 incorporates a unique SML
innovation, as the individual winding cores are each
supported by a pair of arms. Therefore, no winding
shafts are needed and critical shaft speed has ceased
to be an issue.
This latest generation of SML’s most innovative winder
is now available and offers a fundamental design
improvement, as the number of winding stations has
been doubled from two to four. This means that turret
the indexing angle during roll changes has been cut
from 180 degree to 90 degree and the cycle time has
been slashed from 30 to a mere 17 seconds.
The mechanical design of the winder makes it
extremely straightforward to operate and easy to
service. All the electric drives and electrically operated
solenoid valves have been moved from the indexing
turret to the winder´s basic unit, thus removing the
need for a rotary commutator joint. All that remain are
pneumatic control conduits for the opening and closing
of the winding arms, a design renement that greatly
simplies adjustments for different roll widths.

The new design also offers benets in the
following areas:
•

Increased efciency
4-station design enables the production at full
speed of extremely short rolls in lengths of less than
200m. As the rewinding of small rolls from a mother
roll is no longer required, this provides a genuine
boost to production efciency.

Improved roll quality
Good winding quality is maintained during indexing
by means of a special, auxiliary contact roller
and the shorter 90 degree indexing angle derived
from design 4-station.
An optional solution for coreless winding is available.

•

Thin core technology
A number of improvements have facilitated a
reduction of the minimum core wall thickness
to 3.5mm. This results in massive cost savings,
especially in the case of short rolls.

SML winder series W3000 is available in standard 4-up,
5-up, 6-up and 8-up widths and as reected by the sales
gures, their design sets new standards with regard to
functionality and winding quality.
