In all technical applications, the connection from continuous to discontinuous processes is a challenge, be
it the takeoff and landing of a plane or
the landing of a ship. In film extrusion,
this interface is found in the winder,
where every so often the finished roll
has to be taken out and the new core
needs to be started up – without interrupting the extrusion process. Turret
winders are the standard solution to
this problem, but they comprise some
immanent disadvantages: for example,
the uncontrolled winding during the
turret movement which results in
„indexing scrap“.
Rather than fighting all intrinsic
problems of turrets, the series 2000
winders eliminate indexing in the first
place: series 2000 winders operate
individually moveable winding stations, thus having no free web length
at roll change. Due to their suitability

for a broad range of applications such
as paper, plastic film, and plastic
sheet, these winders are used in cast
film lines, sheet extrusion lines, and
extrusion coating and lamination lines.
Various cutting units are available for
different applications and a wide range
of thicknesses.
Series 2000 winders are known for
their solid and versatile design.
Depending on the field of use, they
are operated at speeds from a few
meters to 600 m/min. For such high
line speeds, the winders also include
a built-in anti-vibration system. Any
vibrations that do arise are deflected
to the side walls by means of steel
anchoring rods, where they are dampened down into polymer concrete.
Sensitive web tension control is guaranteed by an ultra-light carbon-fiber
dancer roller system. Web tension is

controlled in the speed control mode
making it independent from both motor
size and bobbin diameter.
A satellite system optimizes the angle
between the wound bobbin and the
incoming web, which in return minimizes the trapping of air. The center
driven winder can produce rolls in both
contact and gap modes to optimize the
roll quality of the different films.
Series 2000 winders have large 15”
TFT color operating screens. The PLC
offers individually adjustable winding
taper curves for various products. The
error diagnostics tools and a modem
connection ensure easy servicing and
troubleshooting by engineers of customers and SML service technicians.
