nnnnThe Need
nnnnIn the past, conventional Claus sulfur
nnnnrecovery processes were adequately
nnnncontrolled on the basis of ratio or
nnnnexcess process air. However, the
nnnndevelopment of new and modified
nnnnsulfur recovery processes has
nnnndramatically changed the analytical
nnnnrequirements placed on the tail gas
nnnnanalyzer. These applications require
nnnnaccurate chemical concentration data
nnnnover wide dynamic ranges. Selective
nnnnoxidation processes may require the
nnnnanalyzer to control the H2S/S02 ratio
nnnnat values ranging from 1:7 to greater
nnnnthan 10:1. In addition, there is an
nnnnincreased need to provide reliable
nnnnprocess data during upset conditions
nnnn(to 5% H2S or S02), to ensure correct
nnnnresponse to such conditions. Data on
nnnnCOS and CS2 concentrations are also
nnnnincreasingly used to monitor catalyst
nnnnand overall sulfur plant performance.

nnnnUsed in conjunction with the ASR
nnnn900 sampling probe, which provides
nnnntrouble-free sampling, the Model 900
nnnnensures maximum data availability
nnnnfor optimum operation of all sulfur
nnnnrecovery processes.
nnnnThe Measurement
nnnnThe Western Research® Model 900
nnnnuses our proprietary high resolution
nnnnUV technology in a dual beam,
nnnnmultiple wavelength configuration.
nnnnResolution better than 0.02 nm
nnnnis provided by high intensity, line
nnnnsource lamps. These sources emit
nnnnat a fixed wavelength providing
nnnngreat measurement stability, and
nnnnemit low total power removing the
nnnnpotential for sample photolysis. The
nnnnhigh resolution enables unparalleled
nnnnlinearity over a wide dynamic range
nnnn(less than 1 % deviation over 4 to
nnnn5 orders of magnitude) which, in
nnnnturn, leads to simple, robust data
nnnnanalysis. A six-position filter wheel
nnnnenables one reference and five
nnnnmeasure wavelengths. The dual
nnnnbeam configuration, combined with
nnnnthe reference measurement, ensures
nnnnlow noise performance with minimal
nnnnbaseline and span drift.
nnnnWhen combined with the ASR 900
nnnnsample probe, the Model 900 is a
nnnncomplete analytical system providing
nnnnmaximum performance and minimal
nnnnmaintenance. The ASR 900 probe
nnnnincorporates a temperature-controlled
nnnnsulfur condenser providing sulfur
nnnnvapor control at the sample point and
nnnnensuring that no plugging will occur
nnnnin the sample lines and analyzer.
nnnnAn integrated shut-off valve allows
nnnnservicing without removal of the
nnnnprobe.
