The Need

nnnn

In the past, conventional Claus sulfur

nnnn

recovery processes were adequately

nnnn

controlled on the basis of ratio or

nnnn

excess process air. However, the

nnnn

development of new and modified

nnnn

sulfur recovery processes has

nnnn

dramatically changed the analytical

nnnn

requirements placed on the tail gas

nnnn

analyzer. These applications require

nnnn

accurate chemical concentration data

nnnn

over wide dynamic ranges. Selective

nnnn

oxidation processes may require the

nnnn

analyzer to control the H2S/S02 ratio

nnnn

at values ranging from 1:7 to greater

nnnn

than 10:1. In addition, there is an

nnnn

increased need to provide reliable

nnnn

process data during upset conditions

nnnn

(to 5% H2S or S02), to ensure correct

nnnn

response to such conditions. Data on

nnnn

COS and CS2 concentrations are also

nnnn

increasingly used to monitor catalyst

nnnn

and overall sulfur plant performance.

The Measurement

nnnn

The Western Research® Model 900

nnnn

uses our proprietary high resolution

nnnn

UV technology in a dual beam,

nnnn

multiple wavelength configuration.

nnnn

Resolution better than 0.02 nm

nnnn

is provided by high intensity, line

nnnn

source lamps. These sources emit

nnnn

at a fixed wavelength providing

nnnn

great measurement stability, and

nnnn

emit low total power removing the

nnnn

potential for sample photolysis. The

nnnn

high resolution enables unparalleled

nnnn

linearity over a wide dynamic range

nnnn

(less than 1 % deviation over 4 to

nnnn

5 orders of magnitude) which, in

nnnn

turn, leads to simple, robust data

nnnn

analysis. A six-position filter wheel

enables one reference and five

nnnn

measure wavelengths. The dual

beam configuration, combined with

the reference measurement, ensures

low noise performance with minimal

baseline and span drift.

When combined with the ASR 900

sample probe, the Model 900 is a

complete analytical system providing

incorporates a temperature-controlled

sulfur condenser providing sulfur

vapor control at the sample point and

ensuring that no plugging will occur
