nnnnThis innovative sensing solu-
nnnntion is applicable to industries
nnnnthat convert plies of materials
nnnninto embossed napkins, paper
nnnntowels, plastic-lined paper table
nnnncloths, and other consumer
nnnnproducts. The Model SS100 Web
nnnnSensing System uses
nnnnMICROSONIC®, thru-beam sen-
nnnnsors to eliminate the costly prob-
nnnnlem of broken plies wrapping
nnnnaround, heating up, and damag-
nnnning embossing rolls, as well as
nnnnthe resulting downtime required
nnnnto make necessary repairs.
nnnnThey also eliminate false trips
nnnnor no trips at all resulting from
nnnndusty environments, or prob-
nnnnlems associated with sensors
nnnnnot immune to changing colors
nnnnand materials.
nnnnWhat does the SS100
nnnnWeb Sensing System do?
nnnnEquipped with up to three
nnnnpairs (transmitter and receiver)
nnnnof MICROSONIC®, thru-beam
nnnnsensors, the SS100 system
nnnnmonitors the entire width of the
nnnnembossed web as it leaves the
nnnnembossing rolls. Machine
nnnnspeeds in excess of 26 feet per
nnnnsecond as well as dust, differ-
nnnnent colors and textures have no
nnnneffect on the sensing capability
nnnnof these sensors. During opera-
nnnntion, when one of the sensors
nnnndetects a tear in the web, a
nnnnmissing ply or even a hole in the
nnnnweb of predetermined size, the
nnnnSS100 system immediately out-
nnnnputs an alarm signal. The signal
nnnncan be used to alert an opera-
nnnntor, automatically shear the pa-
nnnnper ahead of the embossing
nnnnrolls, or automatically stop the
nnnnmachine. As a result, the em-
nnnnbossing rolls are saved from
nnnnsevere damage and time-con-
nnnnsuming repairs. After the web is
nnnnrethreaded, the embossing part
nnnnof the operation can resume.
nnnnUsing the amount of sound
nnnnenergy transmitted through the
nnnnplies of material to calibrate the
nnnnsystem and detect the breaks,
nnnnthe SS100 system operates on
nnnna supply voltage of 85 to 270
nnnnVAC (50/60 Hz).The supply cur-
nnnnrent ranges from 10 to 40 (typi-
nnnncal) mA.Three push-buttons are
nnnnprovided to calibrate the detec-
nnnntor, set and reset the indications
nnnnof a ply break, and view and
nnnnsometimes change the various
nnnnsettings. A digital display pro-
nnnnvides various information on
nnnneach of the sensor pair chan-
nnnnnels and a numeric display
nnnnshows, sequentially, the signal

nnnnshear the paper ahead
nnnnof the embossing roll, or
