nnnnSUPERPROX® Model SM300 se-
nnnnries of proximity sensors as a re-
nnnnplacement for inductive proximity
nnnnsensors and fixed-field photoelec-
nnnntric sensors. Its long range, small
nnnnsize, fast response, performance,
nnnnreliability, and low cost, offers a
nnnnsimple, easy to use,once-and-for-
nnnnall solution to many of the prox-
nnnnimity sensing problems encoun-
nnnntered daily in almost every indus-
nnnntry.
nnnnThe SM300 proximity sensor
nnnnprovides reliable detection of ob-
nnnnjects up to 102 mm (4") from the
nnnnsensor face, performance un-
nnnnmatched by other proximity sen-
nnnnsors of the same size or larger.
nnnnAt this distance, the sensor is
nnnnsafely out of harms way, that is
nnnnan especially important cost sav-
nnnnings benefit. Easy to install, the
nnnnSM300 is available in two differ-
nnnnent housing styles: the 12 mm
nnnnthreaded barrel or the flat-profile
nnnnhousing both available in ULTEM®
nnnnplastic. As with all SUPERPROX®
nnnnsensors, cable and connector
nnnnstyles are available.
nnnnThe SM300 is inherently ca-
nnnnpable of automatically detecting
nnnnall materials regardless of color,
nnnnshape, and composition (trans-
nnnnparent or opaque, liquid or solid)
nnnnincluding clear glass, mirrors,
nnnnwood, powder, ink, ferrous and
nnnnnonferrous metal, plastics, and
nnnnobjects that change colors. While
nnnnsome sensors require adjustment
nnnn(through the use of a sensitivity
nnnnpotentiometer) to the material
nnnnthey are detecting, the SM300 de-
nnnntects most materials automati-
nnnncally. With protection ratings of
nnnnNEMA 4X (indoor use only) and
nnnnIP67, the sensor resists most ac-
nnnnids and bases and is compatible
nnnnwith many chemicals, cleaning
nnnnsolutions, and chemical-based
nnnnproducts. The SM300 sensor
nnnnseries is CE certified.
nnnnThese are just a few of the ben-

nnnnThe applications suited to
nnnnthe SM300 proximity sensor are
nnnnas broad as the benefits just men-

nnnnThe SM300 can detect positive
nnnnstop and true home positions for
nnnnservo-control systems and tool
nnnnand parts presence in automated
nnnnCNC centers and assembly
nnnnequipment. It is an ideal solution
nnnnfor sensing part and pin presence
nnnnand punch-through verification in
nnnnstamping dies. Other applica-
nnnntions include die open and close
nnnndetection in stamping, plastic in-
nnnnjection molding, die casting ap-
nnnnplications, and many other ap-
nnnnplications where traditional prox-
nnnnimity sensing methods cannot re-
nnnnliably detect the large variety of
nnnnmaterials running through the pro-
nnnncess or they are limited by sens-
nnnning range.
nnnnOperation
nnnnThe SM300 series is a self-con-
nnnntained, pulse-echo, proximity
nnnnsensing device that both trans-
nnnnmits and receives sonic energy
nnnnwithin an operating distance of
nnnn6 mm (0.25") to 102 mm (4").
nnnnThe sensor combines the latest
nnnnpiezoelectric and microprocessor
nnnntechnology for the best possible
nnnnperformance in almost any sens-
nnnning application.
nnnnThis 500 kHz proximity sensor
nnnnoperates on 12 to 24 VDC and is
nnnnequipped with both sinking (NPN)

nnnnsensor has two status LEDs: a
nnnngreen LED indicates "power on"
nnnnwhen no object is present, and
nnnnan amber LED indicates object
nnnnpresence, regardless of output
nnnnstate (N.O. or N.C.). Just one LED
nnnnis illuminated at any given time.
nnnnDuring operation, the sensor
nnnntransmits to and receives sonic
nnnnpulses from objects in front of it
nnnnwithout interruption. A discriminat-
nnnning microprocessor makes it pos-
nnnnsible for the sensor to accept only
nnnnthose pulse echoes received from
nnnnobjects within the fixed sensing
nnnnwindow limits and ignore all other
nnnnobjects. An object is detected
nnnnwhen it is within the fixed sens-
nnnning window.
