Comanche 3 is an
advanced, highly efficient,
supercritical coal unit
that can generate more
electricity with less fuel,
compared to previous
units.
The Comanche 3 generating unit is an expansion of the existing Comanche power
station in Pueblo, Colorado.
Following a contract awarded in September 2005 and a commercial operation in
2010, the unit is providing Xcel Energy customers with clean, reliable and economical
electricity from the United States’ abundant domestic coal resources.
The supercritical Alstom two-pass boiler at Comanche 3 is the core element of one of
the most advanced steam power plant in the USA.

The Alstom boiler at Comanche 3 is a vertical wall, two-pass design equipped with
Alstom’s unique TFS 2000® firing system that will burn Powder River Basin coal.
Coupled with a selective catalytic reduction system, the Comanche 3 unit will achieve
one of the lowest nitrogen oxide emissions in the US.
The boiler’s high pressure, high temperature advanced steam cycle significantly
increases plant efficiency, and thus will also minimise emissions and fuel costs.
