The condenser is the
main auxiliary of a steam
turbine. It is fed with
steam from the lowpressure exhaust of the
turbine and cooled by the
cooling water available
on site. In addition to its
basic steam condensing
function, it also ensures
the vacuum required at
the turbine exhaust and
to extract the
non-condensable gases.
Alstom designs, engineers and manufactures condensers for all types of power
plant, from nuclear to industrial applications.
Alstom has been designing and manufacturing condensers for over 50 years
and today has delivered or has under construction, engineering or commissioning
over 2500 condensers with a capacity of 567 GW of electric output, equipping
power plants of up to 1500 MW electric output.

High performance, high reliability
Alstom’s patented tube bundle designs have a track record of
outstanding performance over the past 50 years. In that time,
the Alstom axial or lateral condensers have demonstrated
unrivalled reliability, whether as original installations or as
retrofits. Alstom condensers delivered so far are equivalent to
a total output of over 250,000 MW.
Highly efficient
The highly efficient tube bundles are scaled to meet the needs
of any size of power plant. Each condenser contains a certain
number of tube bundles selected out the 40 standardised
tube bundles, ranging from 1600 to 7000 tubes per bundle.
Reduced costs
Alstom axial or lateral condensers are floor mounted; this
simplifies construction of the turbine foundation, short civil
works duration and erection time. They are delivered as fully
tubed modules, so that little welding is required on site. All of
this contributes to reducing costs.
Robust design
Alstom condensers have been designed to handle turbine and
steam generator overloads and variations in cooling water
temperature. They are also resistant to impingement erosion
and tube vibration.
