Selective Catalytic
Reduction (SCR) at
the Sines coal-fired
steam power plant
scrubs out 80% of NOx.
In July 2008 Alstom was awarded a contract by EDP, the main power producer in
Portugal, to retrofit Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units at the 4 × 314 MWe
steam Sines power plant, in the district of Setúbal, the important industrial centre
along the south-western coast of Portugal. These SCR units that utilise heated
ammonia solution as a reagent and a vanadium / titanium honeycomb as a catalyst
scrubbing out 80% of nitrogen oxides emissions.
Removal of NOx, through the installation of a SCR plant, is important in reducing
emissions from these ‘older style’ coal-fired power plants but it is not straightforward.
The biggest challenge faced on this project was to install the new SCR plants into
existing sites where space is very limited. The installation was adapted and a 500 ton
crane was put up piece by piece between two existing units to access the boiler.
With this SCR units, Portugal has become one of the few countries in Europe to have
equipped all of their coal-fired plants with systems to control both SOx (sulphur oxides)
and NOx thus meeting emission targets set out by the EU.
